Fjord Norway: majestic fjords, magnificent glaciers, charming and vibrant fjord towns. Is this the destination for your holiday this year? Whether you are a returning guest or are visiting for the first time, the region has something for everybody. The UNESCO fjords the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord are obvious choices, but there are also many other places where you can experience the fjords – with less people. The Norwegian Scenic Routes are excellent points of departure for exploring our region. Ten of these routes are in Fjord Norway, and you will find many of our most popular attractions along or near them, such as Vøringsfossen waterfall, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), the Atlantic Road and Trollstigen Road, but there are many detours you can take and go exploring along the fjords and in the mountains. And don't forget the coast. You will find many gems along the coast of Fjord Norway, such as Karmøy outside Haugesund – with one of Norway’s most beautiful beaches, Solund – a paradise for kayakers; Selje in Nordfjord – Norway’s first pilgrimage destination; or beautiful Ålesund with its Art Nouveau architecture, close to the Sunnmøre Alps. Little wonder that many artists have been inspired by the magnificent landscape of Fjord Norway. In Bergen, you can visit KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes, such as Troldhaugen, the home of Edvard Grieg, and don't miss Astruptunet in Sunnfjord, where Nikolai Astrup lived for 15 years. The many stave churches in the region are still there, as testimony to the dawn of Christianity in Norway. Take the opportunity to savour the taste of Fjord Norway. Valldal is widely known for its fantastic strawberries, and you have to try the cider produced in Hardanger and around the Sognefjord. Mutton and lamb dishes are typical of Western Norway, and you mustn't miss the local delicacy klippfisk in Nordmøre. Representatives of haute cuisine can be found in Stavanger and Bergen, where there are restaurants that have been awarded Michelin stars. Many of the hotels in the region are proud to serve local quality produce, so there's a lot to look forward to!

Put simply, a glacier is the snow that fell last year. In reality, glaciers are formed due to an accumulation of snow and ice over many, many years. When the ice is more than 20 metres thick, it sinks downwards thanks to gravity. A glacier is therefore ice in movement. Learn more about glaciers in this film.

My name is Daniel and I'm from London. London is a very multicultural city and there's a lot going on, which is fantastic. It can be hectic, but I love the big city vibe, especially the art and street food scene! Even though I like the noise of the city, it can be overwhelming and it's very hard to escape. I feel I constantly need to check my phone and be available. Travelling to Fjord Norway, learning about a new culture and immersing myself in the majestic fjord landscape was the perfect way to get a break from the great city of London. To be honest, I haven't actually travelled for about nine years. I've just been working really hard and I haven't really been able to take a break! This journey to Fjord Norway took me down memory lane of my early twenties when I used to travel abroad by myself a lot. I have always enjoyed travelling solo because it puts me in a situation where I kind of have to talk to new people.

Last autumn we invited Glo from New York, Charlotte from Paris and Daniel from London to Fjord Norway. We thought they deserved a break from the great cities they live in. Autumn is a great time to visit us – it’s less crowded, there are beautiful autumn colours in the fjords and you can enjoy the crisp, fresh air. We took them on a journey where they could explore our spectacular nature as well as our vibrant culture and food scene.

My name is Glo and I am from Brooklyn, New York. New York is a great city to live in, but it can be a little hectic and crazy at times. People are so busy and it is really hard to pause and take a break. I believe that to appreciate the place you live in; you have to get out from time to time and kind of look at life in a different way. Coming to Fjord Norway was a dream for me. To be honest I didn't realize that it's actually not that far from New York, but it still feels like a different world.

Fjord Norway is an adventure in the autumn. Trees and vegetation in autumn colours that are reflected in the cold fjord, maybe some snow already on the peaks, fresh air - and less people than in summer. Some outdoor activities give you the best experiences in the fall - such as hiking, or kayaking. Enjoy good local food typical of the season, such as lamb, and enjoy yourself in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate.

UNESCO sites, world famous hiking trips and the world’s most significant road trip: Fjord Norway can offer all this and much more. For the adventurous traveller you can challenge yourself in the spectacular nature of the West of Norway. Maybe we can tempt you to opt for a hiking trip to Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock), climbing the Troll Wall or sit or stand at the tip of Trolltunga (the Troll's Tongue)? The UNESCO World Heritage sites Nærøyfjorden and Geirangerfjorden are perfect examples of what a fjord actually is. Jump into a kayak and get close to untouched nature, go sightseeing on a fjord cruise or take a road trip along the fjords. Learn more about the past of this area by taking a tour to the abandoned farms in the steep mountainsides, taste local food, visit the UNESCO site Bryggen in Bergen (The Hanseatic neighbourhood) and visit the home of composer Edvard Grieg. Travel by sea, road or rail and either way, you will learn and witness the unique places to visit and roads to travel. Trollstigen, the most visited tourist road in Norway, is a spectacular sight, while the Atlantic Road gets you close to the sea. Both are easily accessible from either Ålesund or Molde.
